Many thanks to the Internet Archive for providing this vintage footage.

This film is available on Metal Type DVD - Volume One.

A "VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE" film, made in 1947, extolling the virtues of the printing industry to potential apprentices.

The film was made by Burton Holmes Films, Inc. of Chicago, USA and starts with a quick overview of the production processes, including letterpress composition, press work and bindery.

In the composing room we look at the mark-up man, hand setting, linotype, monotype keyboard and caster, proof reader, page make-up and stone-men.

In the press room we look at platen presses, automatic cylinders, offset letterpress and rotary presses.

The film finishes off by outlining the benefits of a career in the print industry to potential apprentices.
