General Chat / Re: Die Cutting on an Adana?

I would avoid die cutting on your adana , they dont have the strength in the manufacture of the platen to cope with die cutting of any area over a couple of inch square . you would be better off parting out the job to someone with a proper press ,not meaning that an adana is not proper it just is made of poor quality material where huge pressures are concerned .

Bradford industrial museum has a treadle operated model whish does not work currently.

Welcome to the forum Donald. Hope to see you again, next time I'm there. Looked like you'd had the Linotype running last time I visited.

The tympan doesn't tilt away from the form as expected. This tilt is an important safety feature on other contemporary platen presses.
I would be very careful around this one.

Right reading type is used on offset letterpress machines like the Rejafix. Or you could print on the back of a translucent substrate.

General Chat / Die Cutting on an Adana?
« Last post by Dave Hughes on May 15, 2013, 05:50:05 PM »
I'm looking into making a product that requires die cutting.

Is it possible to do on a table-top press like the old Adana (pictured) that I am currently using for hot foil?

Can you get custom dies made in the UK?

Is anybody doing this sort of thing?

I'm looking into cutting fairly thick card covered with a thin cloth material.

It's a 'TP48' press. produced I imagine to provide for a level of production above the 8-5 table-top press. It was lighter and smaller than most second-hand cast-iron treadle presses, so could be used in homes/sheds etc.

Mechanick Exercises on Printing (1677) by Joseph Moxon (reprinted by Oxford University Press: I don't know if there's an electronic version yet) is the earliest description of how it was originally done, and goes into a lot of detail. So if you really want to start from scratch...
Best of luck, sounds a fun project, but not any easy one.

I tried getting a clue from the characters that had been inked!

A C E O and a few numbers. Looks like a couple of the hyphens have been used as well.
