Name in hot metal
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:02:53 PM »
Gentlemen:

I am a press photographer of over 40 years, ex Express Newspapers, Daily Mail & Sun after starting via the Grimsby/Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph, Gravesend & Dartford Reporter. I wondered if someone might be able to assist.

On my new web site I would like my name  < © mikegunnill > displayed in hot metal, lower case in an old fashioned font. Does anyone still have "pieces of type", that I could borrow, beg, steal or pay for? I could then photograph the supplied text and use the image on my site.

Sorry to be pain, but I would be very grateful for any help.  I have gone through several stock web sites and there is nothing suitable.

Many thanks
Mike Gunnill

Hi Mike, and welcome to the Forum!

I don't want to appear to be doing anyone out of a job, but have you heard of LettermPress?

I notice from your website that you're an Apple fan.

There's an app called Lettermpress, it's on the iPad at the moment, but I think there could be a regular Mac version.

Would it be possible to get it to create a graphic for your site?

Here's a video:

Many thanks for your reply.

Yes I have seen this site before.  I really want my name prior to the printing stage, i.e. all set and ready to print. It seemed such a good idea, but not easy to put into practice-which makes me want it more! Thanks again especially for sending the video.

Many thanks for the personal messages/tweets I have received over my quest to obtain "my name" in type.  Yesterday I received exactly what I needed and my journey is now over.  I am most grateful to everyone who offered their help/assistance, especially the support I received from David Hughes.

I remember the printers when I first started in newspapers, for some reason I ended up drinking with them after the print run. They were good chaps to know and I think a little of that feeling came back when I received help from this forum.

Thank you again, I am grateful.
